Three Types of Yoga and Their Benefits: Find the Practice Your Body Needs

Sunsara Yoga in Pelican Waters, Caloundra, offers three types of yoga, each with distinct benefits

Not all yoga styles are the same – and that’s the beautiful thing.

At Sunsara Yoga in Pelican Waters, Caloundra we offer three types of yoga – each offering distinct benefits, supporting your body and mind in a different way. Some days you might need movement, strength and energy. Other days you might need deep tension release, or time to find stillness and space to reset.

And winter yoga practice? It’s actually the perfect season to explore all three.

Because when the mornings are cooler, the days feel shorter, and our bodies naturally start to slow down – choosing the right yoga style for how you feel can make all the difference.

Here’s a little Sunshine Coast guide to the difference between dynamic yoga, yin yoga and restorative yoga – and why each one deserves a place in your practice.

Understanding the different types of yoga and their benefits can help you choose a practice that supports you through every season.

Stretch & Flex – Dynamic (Yang) Yoga in Caloundra

Saturdays 8–9am

Dynamic yoga is the active side of your practice.

Think upright postures, engaged muscles, movement flowing with the breath, and a little warmth building from the inside out.

This is our Stretch & Flex class – a dynamic yoga practice in Caloundra designed to energise your body, build strength and improve mobility over time.

A pose like Pigeon Pose looks different here:

  • Torso lifted

  • Muscles switched on

  • A deeper hip stretch

  • Held for several steady breaths

The benefits of our dynamic yoga Stretch & Flex class come from combining breath-led movement and strengthening postures. Our vinyasa flow creates a practice that feels invigorating, grounding and warming.

We practise on our spacious covered balcony overlooking the canals of Pelican Waters, with fresh air, birdsong and (hopefully) a little winter sunshine.

Perfect for: getting out of bed on a cold Saturday morning and feeling amazing by 9am.

Think: yoga for energy.

We finish with our warming ginger tea and homemade treats – because the little rituals matter too.

Slow & Easy – Yin Yoga in Caloundra

2nd & 4th Sunday of the month | 4.30–5.30pm

Yin yoga is the beautiful counterpart to all the doing.

Where dynamic practice creates energy and strength, yin invites you to slow down, soften and listen.

In yin yoga, poses are held for longer periods – usually around 3-5 minutes – allowing the muscles to relax so the body can gently release into stillness, and enabling the nervous system to slow down and settle.

Sleeping Swan is the yin version of Pigeon Pose:

  • Torso folds forward

  • Muscles soften

  • The stretch becomes quieter, but you still feel sensation

  • You stay long enough to truly settle

It’s not about pushing further – it’s about creating space, and softening into it.

Our fortnightly Slow & Easy yin yoga class is a beautiful practice for flexibility, relaxation and releasing deep tension – especially during winter when we naturally tend to brace, contract and hold more.

We practice indoors in our cosy carpeted space, creating the perfect environment to unwind.

Perfect for: releasing the week’s tension before Monday arrives.

Think: yoga for tension release.

Sunsara’s Chai blend and homemade treats to close.

Only 6 mats available for this class.

Sunsara Yoga in Pelican Waters, Caloundra, offers three types of yoga, each with distinct benefits

Yoga Calm – Restorative Yoga in Caloundra

Monthly (usually on a Friday) | 6-7.20pm

Restorative yoga is a category of its own.

This is your invitation to stop trying, stop pushing and simply be supported.

With bolsters, blankets and carefully placed props, restorative yoga creates a deeply supported environment where the body can soften and the nervous system can settle.

Winter has a way of quietly draining us – less sunlight, disrupted sleep, busy seasons and the constant push to keep going.

A restorative yoga practice offers the opposite:

  • More support

  • More stillness

  • More space to recover

In restorative yoga, Sleeping Swan is fully supported with bolsters and blankets, allowing the body to fully rest, soften and feel supported.

It’s not about stretching deeper. It’s about allowing your body to rest deeply enough to find its way back to balance.

Perfect for: the kind of rest that a sleep-in doesn’t quite deliver.

Think: yoga for relaxation and recovery.

We turn up the cosiness in our indoor space with candles, soothing tunes and fluffy blankets for Savasana, finishing with Ayurvedic golden milk and homemade treats.

Only 6 mats available for this class.

Three Types of Yoga, Three Benefits – One Balanced Practice

The magic happens when these practices work together.

  • Dynamic yoga builds strength, energy and mobility.

  • Yin yoga creates softness, space and release.

  • Restorative yoga gives your body the recovery time it needs to absorb all the benefits.

Together, they create a balanced yoga practice that supports you through every season.

  • Move with Stretch & Flex.

  • Soften with Slow & Easy.

  • Rest with Yoga Calm.

That’s how a practice grows – becoming something that supports you, strengthens you and softens with you over time.
