Strong & Steady: A Different Way to Build Strength with Yoga

Yoga for strength classes at Sunsara Yoga in Pelican Waters, Caloundra

I thought twice about designing a four-week strength series at Sunsara Yoga.

After all, yoga and “strength training” aren’t words we always expect to hear together.

Strength training can conjure images of the gym – pushing harder, lifting heavier, chasing results. Yoga, on the other hand, has traditionally focused on calming the mind and softening the body rather than pushing it.

And yet, the more I reflected on it, the more it made sense.

Because strength – when approached mindfully – is one of the most supportive things we can build through yoga.

Not the “no pain, no gain” kind of strength. But the kind that creates stability, confidence and ease in the body.

That’s the idea behind Strong & Steady: Saturday Strength at Sunsara Yoga – a four-week beginner-friendly yoga series held on our spacious outdoor balcony in Pelican Waters on the Sunshine Coast, overlooking the canals. Each week our regular Stretch & Flex class focuses on 'Strength', throughout the month of March.

A calm setting. A thoughtful approach. And a gradual progression that helps you discover how strong yoga can really be.

Why Strength Matters in Yoga

Strength in yoga isn’t about forcing the body into deeper shapes.

It’s about creating support from within.

When muscles engage steadily and intelligently, the body moves with more control, joints feel safer, and poses become more comfortable rather than more strained.

Here are six reasons strength plays an important role in a balanced yoga practice.

1. Strength creates stability

Strength acts like inner scaffolding for the body. When muscles engage around joints, they provide support so the body doesn’t collapse into passive flexibility.

This stability helps us move with confidence rather than strain.

2. Strength improves control

In yoga we’re rarely completely still. We transition between poses, balance on one leg, or shift weight between hands and feet.

Strength allows the body to maintain stability under movement – something especially valuable as we age and want to remain active.

3. Strength helps the body absorb stress

A stronger body distributes load more evenly.

Instead of pressure landing in one vulnerable joint or muscle group, strength spreads the work across the body so movement feels lighter and safer.

4. Strength improves everyday movement

The strength we build in yoga translates directly into daily life – from standing and walking to lifting, reaching and bending.

It helps the body move more efficiently and comfortably.

5. Strength balances flexibility

Yoga is often associated with stretching, but flexibility without strength can create instability.

Building strength alongside mobility helps the body feel supported rather than overstretched.

6. Strength simply feels good

There’s something deeply satisfying about feeling capable in your body.

Strength builds not only physical resilience, but also mental and emotional confidence.

A Progressive Approach to Strength

Each week in our regular Stretch & Flex class, our Strong & Steady yoga series gently moves the goalposts – adding time, movement or load – while keeping the practice calm and mindful.

Rather than jumping straight into challenging poses, we build strength step-by-step.

Week 1: Building the Foundation

We begin with structure – learning how to stack bones, activate muscles and create steady support from feet to crown.

This week introduces isometric strength – simple holds that teach the nervous system stability.

Think of it as building your inner scaffolding.

Week 2: Strength in Motion

Next we introduce controlled movement while maintaining alignment.

Strength now means stability under movement – the ability to stay supported even as the body shifts and rotates.

Week 3: Upper Body Strength

With the foundation established, we gradually increase load through the upper body.

This week focuses on shoulder stability and pushing strength, helping the arms, chest and upper back work together safely.

Week 4: Resilience and Endurance

In the final week we explore sustaining effort calmly for longer.

Holding poses a little longer, repeating movements, and building resilience and endurance –  while keeping the breath steady and the mind relaxed.

By this point something interesting often happens.

Instead of feeling strained, the body begins to feel organised, supported and capable.

Strength Without the Gym

One of the most beautiful things about building strength through yoga is that it doesn’t feel aggressive.

You’re still moving with breath. You’re still calming the nervous system.

And you’re still practising in a space designed for ease – our outdoor yoga space in Pelican Waters, where morning light reflects off the canals and birdsong drifts across the balcony.

Strength, it turns out, can feel surprisingly calm.
